Off-grid solar energy systems are the ideal solution for areas without access to the electrical grid or for projects seeking complete energy independence. However, without proper sizing, the system either falls short or creates unnecessary costs.
The first step is determining daily energy consumption. The power ratings and daily usage hours of all electrical devices are calculated to derive the total kWh requirement. Seasonal variations should also be considered.
Required panel capacity is calculated based on daily consumption, regional sunlight hours, and panel efficiency. Sizing should be based on winter months when sunlight hours are at their lowest.
Sufficient energy storage capacity must be planned for cloudy days (autonomy period). Typically 2-3 days of autonomy is recommended. Battery usable capacity limits should also be factored in.
The inverter must be selected with capacity to meet instantaneous power demand. Total wattage of simultaneously running devices and startup currents (inductive loads) should be considered.
PVAGE software automatically handles off-grid system sizing. It calculates panel, battery, and inverter capacity based on consumption profiles, and generates production estimates using regional solar irradiance data.
