Most solar company websites work like a printed brochure: services, references and a contact form. Visitors arrive with a question such as "how many panels fit on my roof, and how much will my bill drop?"; when they cannot find an answer, they leave without filling in the form. This article sets out how to turn your website into a channel that offers visitors real value and collects qualified leads.
Why calculator tools?
Before sharing contact details, visitors expect something in return. Seeing an estimate for their own roof and bill is the most effective form of that return. Calculator tools benefit the company in three ways:
- More leads: visitors enter their details to see a result, and share contact information to receive it in more detail.
- Better-qualified leads: the record includes not just a name and phone number but the address, building type, bill amount and high-consumption appliances. The first conversation is far more productive with this information.
- Realistic expectations: visitors form their first impression of system size and yield from your own website.
Which fields should the form ask for?
Every additional field lowers the completion rate. Ask only for what the first conversation and an initial sizing genuinely require:
| Information | Why it is needed |
|---|---|
| Location and roof (on a map) | Basic data for usable area and solar exposure |
| Building type | Residential, commercial, industrial or agricultural; defines the consumption profile |
| Monthly bill or consumption | System size and savings estimate |
| High-consumption appliances | Loads that will increase demand, such as air conditioning, heat pumps or electric vehicles |
| Name, phone, email | To follow up |
Collect details such as photos, meter numbers or installation specifics during the site survey, not in the first form.
How to present the result
- Present the result as an estimate or a range, not as a firm commitment.
- State briefly which assumptions the calculation is based on (location, orientation, bill amount).
- Explain that final figures will be confirmed after a site survey and shade analysis.
- Offer a clear next step alongside the result, such as "Request a free site survey".
Respond to leads quickly
The value of a website lead falls quickly over time; the visitor may have filled in forms on other companies' websites the same day. Therefore:
- Leads should not wait in an email inbox; they should go directly into your customer tracking list and be assigned to a named person.
- Receive an immediate notification for each new lead.
- Refer to the information entered in the form when you first make contact, so the customer does not have to repeat it.

Personal data protection
Forms collect personal data such as names, phone numbers, email addresses and addresses. Link to your privacy notice next to the form, and state clearly why the data is processed and how long it is retained. If you plan to send marketing messages, remember that separate consent is required under applicable law.
What to measure
- Visitor-to-lead conversion: the share of calculator users who leave contact details.
- Lead-to-survey conversion: the share of website leads that reach a site survey appointment.
- Contracts by source: how website leads convert to contracts compared with other sources.
PVAGE website tools
PVAGE provides lead acquisition tools that companies embed on their own websites: a solar feasibility calculator, where visitors draw their roof on a map and enter building type, bill and high-consumption appliances; an advanced solar configurator, a step-by-step wizard with a monthly production chart and a suggested bill of materials; and air-conditioner capacity (BTU) and heat-pump capacity calculators.
Colours, texts and theme are customised for each company. Every request goes straight into the lead list in PVAGE with an email notification, and can be converted to a customer in one click so that the survey and proposal process continues on the same record. See the website lead acquisition tools page for details.
