Panel-Level Shade Analysis

Which panel gets shaded, at what time, how much?

Overview

Panel-Level Shade Detection

PVAGE's shade analysis module performs panel-level shade calculations instead of the traditional "area-based" approach. The amount of shade received by each panel throughout the year is calculated individually.

Capabilities

What You Can Do

Analysis Capabilities

  • Panel-level shade calculation — each panel analyzed individually
  • Sun simulation — the sun path by month and hour with animated shadows
  • Obstacle definition — chimneys, antennas, neighboring buildings and trees, with their heights
  • Seasonal solar angle — winter and summer differences
  • Inter-row shading simulation for ground-mounted projects
Business Value

Why Panel-Level?

Since solar panels operate in series, shading of a single panel can affect the entire string. Panel-level analysis makes the impact of shading visible before installation and helps you produce a more realistic production estimate.

Shading Engine

What the Shading Engine Takes into Account

Shading is calculated in the 3D scene from the real heights of obstacles and the sun's position at the selected month and hour, and it is shown for each panel separately.

Obstacles and Surroundings

  • Rooftop items such as chimneys, vents, antennas and poles, with type and height
  • Surrounding obstacles such as neighbouring buildings, trees and walls, with heights
  • Obstacles can be moved, rotated and resized in the scene
  • 3D building layer with adjustable building height in the map module

Sun and Time

  • The sun's path across the sky by selected month and hour
  • Shadow movement through the day with a time slider
  • Shadow movement played as an animation
  • Winter and summer sun angles compared in the same scene

Result and Use

  • Panel-level shading loss: each panel assessed separately
  • Shaded panels can be grouped separately when stringing
  • Inter-row shading simulation on real terrain elevation for ground-mount plants
  • Panel-level shading losses are taken into account in the production estimate
